Electric guitarist Lewis Winn and bassist Jon Gagan met more than 20 years ago, when Winn, a recent arrival to Santa Fe, was living in a warehouse behind the Alegria bar on Agua Fria street.

"There was a cabinet shop next to the warehouse and Jon came through the shop and was nosing around. I didn't know who he was," Winn recalled.
One circumstance led to another and the two soon found themselves jamming at the apartment where the Gagan bothers, Joe and Tim lived.

"Jon and I had an immediate connection," said Winn, who now lives in Albuquerque and performs with vocalist Susan Clark.

Over the years, Winn and Gagan performed at Albuquerque's La Posada and worked with Laney McDonald's band. They played in various ensembles at clubs, restaurants and parties in Santa Fe.

"We've done such an oddball variety of gigs - in rock bands, jazz bands, blues bands, in bands where I played drums and Lewis sometimes played bass. So you can see that it's been a musical adventure," Gagan said.

"We are two people who enjoy hanging together and we usually do a lot of playing." Winn said that the chemistry between them has improved over time.
But even with these many formal concerts and informal jams, Winn and Gagan never recorded an album as a duo. That situation has been corrected with the recent release of the album "Two Tone".

... Winn contributed six compositions and Gagan four to the 10 selection recording. Both players get the opportunity to lead and to accompany the other at various moments on each cut.

With the recording of "Two Tone" completed, Gagan has returned to the studio to work on another project. It's a world beat album expected to be released sometime next year and that springs from his work with Liebert. Leibert, in fact, will appear on it. And so will Gagan's buddy, Lewis Winn.
